Students will learn the Japanese technique of Itajime Shibori. Itajime is a folded, blocked, and clamped Shibori technique that creates geometric shapes, textures, and blendings of color. Supplies will be included in the class fee to create up to 3 fabric pieces.
Kits, including four multiple shaped blocks (square, circle, triangle, & hexagon) and 1 yard of prepared for dyeing* cotton fabric will be available for purchase.

About Mary Mendla
Mary Mendla is a fiber artist, fine art painter, and apparel designer who produces two lines of women’s apparel, Facets Fashions and Affluere Yoga Wear. Mary has specialized in textile surface design in her fiber art and is an expert in the art of Japanese Shibori. She has taught a variety of fabric surface design techniques throughout her twenty year career including Japanese Shibori, Silk Painting, Batik, and Dye Discharge with Color Layering. She has recently opened a studio, Mary Mendla Fine Art and Apparel, in Thiensville, Wisconsin, which is used for her fine art painting and for classes and workshops. She resides in Grafton, Wisconsin with her husband and two lovable cats.
*Prepared for Dyeing (PFD):
Generally speaking, a PFD item:
- Has had no optic whiteners added and is off-white in color.
- Is sewn with cotton thread (so the stitching dyes the same color).
- Is usually cut oversize because it is understood that the garment is going to be dyed and will shrink.
