Barn Blast 7/12/11 – Very Special Volunteer: Carolyn Joss
Very Special Volunteer
You meet the most interesting people as a Museum Gift Shop volunteer! “Once a lady who’d lived in Japan was here,” says Carolyn Joss, volunteer since 2007. “We talked for almost an hour about her life and the kinds of fabrics available there. It was fascinating!”
Besides meeting interesting visitors, Carolyn does a lot more for the Museum Gift Shop. Along with Betty Schmidt, she helps run the store, arranging displays, pricing new merchandise, and helping select some of the one-of-a-kind gift items available there.
But the role closest to her heart is recruiting and scheduling the Museum Gift Shop’s many volunteers. She manages a cast of dozens who come in weekly, monthly, or over the summer when they’re in town. With the move to the new building, hours and shop square footage will expand, and volunteers will be in demand!
Why would anyone want to be a Museum Gift Shop volunteer? As Carolyn lovingly holds up a two-piece, hand-painted silk outfit, you know what draws her: the fabulous merchandise, and the chance to creatively display and sell them. “When we move to the new building, we will have the space to offer so many more items,” Carolyn says proudly. “We’ll even have walls that can display full-sized quilts. In our current, cramped location, it is almost impossible to display a quilt of that size.”
When Carolyn’s not at the WMQFA, you might find her cooking and serving meals for St. Francis Borgia church. Or she might be relaxing at home, listening to music and pursuing her favorite fiber arts passion, knitting.
If you’re interested in joining Carolyn at the Museum Gift Shop, or just trying it out for an hour to see what it’s like, contact her at cjoss@wi.rr.com .
