In conjunction with her show, “Motherland: Expressions of landscape, life and learning,” opening July 20 at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts, artist Karel Hendee will be teaching two workshops and presenting an evening of inspiration and music. Museum members can take advantage of priority registration by acting now, before registration opens to the public on June 1. Features include:

Thursday, July 21, 2011, 9:30a.m. to noon

“Introduction to Surface Design with Silk “

• Fee: $70 per person
• Maximum attendance: 15 people
• 2-2 ½ hour class
• Fee includes materials such as silks and dyes
• Students will take home several piece of silk art made in class

This workshop is an introduction to silk and dyeing silk with the beautiful and vibrant instant-set dyes (no steaming, heat, or chemical set required). A variety of techniques and a variety of silks will be explored to create beautiful patterns, textures, and color interest on the silk. This workshop is a great introduction to surface design with silk and is great for quilters or those looking to make quick and easy hand-dyed silk fabric to work into their quilts, clothing, accessories, home décor, etc. All materials included. Just come in art-making clothes.

Friday, July 22, 2011, 1p.m – 4p.m.

“Introduction to Silk-Painting” 

• Fee: $95 per person
• Maximum attendance: 12 people
• 3-3 ½ hour class held in afternoon
• Fee includes $35 worth of materials such as silks, dyes and resists
• Students will make several pieces of silk art in class
• After class, Karel will steam and dry each piece and mail them to the students

This workshop will introduce the French “Serti” method of silk painting involving water-based resists, cold wax, and special dyes for silk. We will learn how to design images and lay out the resist on the silk. Then we will paint with flowable dyes to create beautiful color tones and effects. The whole process will be explored from stretching the silk to painting and finishing with a demonstration on steam-setting the silk to make the dyes permanent. This workshop is for those who want to learn how to design and paint imagery on silk which can be framed as art or sewn into quilts, garments, accessories etc. All materials included. Just come in art-making clothes.

Don’t miss this presentation of the patchwork life of an American painter, poet, quilter, gardener, and banjo player. Building upon the roots of tradition, artist Karel Hendee blends the old and the new, the local and the exotic, the sacred and profane materials and qualities into her art. She will weave together images, stories, poetry, and traditional Appalachian mountain music and clogging with her fiancé, Jonathan Lyerly, into an evening that will delight your senses, open your heart, and help you take root in the deep fertile soil of our Motherland.
